How We Test
We test gear on the trail, not in a lab. Every product is field-tested over multiple trips in varying conditions — rain, snow, heat, and everything between. We buy everything ourselves.
Scoring Criteria
Every product receives a score from 0 to 10 based on weighted criteria. Here is exactly how we calculate it.
Trail Performance
We test on multi-day backcountry trips across different terrain and weather. Comfort, protection, and functionality under real conditions are what matter.
Durability & Materials
We evaluate construction quality, material specs, and long-term wear patterns. We test waterproofing, abrasion resistance, and zipper reliability over months of use.
Weight & Packability
We weigh everything on a gram scale and measure packed dimensions. Weight-to-performance ratio is more important than raw weight.
Value
We compare cost per use over expected lifespan. A $300 jacket that lasts 5 years beats a $100 jacket that fails in 1. We track sales and note when to buy.
Tools & Equipment
The tools we use to produce consistent, reproducible results.
- Multi-day backcountry field testing in varied conditions
- Gram-accurate scale for weight verification
- Hydrostatic head tester for waterproofing
- Temperature and humidity logging during sleep system tests
- GPS tracking for terrain and elevation data
Independence Pledge
- No sponsored rankings. Our scores are never influenced by advertising or affiliate relationships.
- We buy everything ourselves. Products are purchased at retail price with our own funds. No vendor-supplied review units.
- Affiliate transparency. We earn commissions from some links. This funds our testing but never affects our scores. Full disclosure.
- Corrections policy. If we get something wrong, we update the article with a visible correction notice and date.
Update Cadence
Gear reviews are updated with new model years. Seasonal gear guides are refreshed before each season. Field test data accumulates over multiple trips.
Every article shows its publish date and last update date. If a review is more than 6 months old without an update, we flag it as potentially outdated.
